Why Therapists Choose to Attend STARAs members of a helping profession, therapists may at times need to work on their own issues. Therapists and other health care professionals have reported STAR to be unsurpassed as a personal growth experience and professional enhancement, with or without pressing symptoms. Some therapists who have taken STAR have discovered, healed, and transcended personal/professional blocks in their work. STAR offers a safe place away from busy schedules with professional help, support, and confidentiality. Being in a quiet rural setting, you can take time to heal your own wounds, receive care, and be supported so that you return to your personal and professional life with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity.
Why Therapists Send Clients to STARTherapists send their clients to STAR to help give them a "boost" into deeper self-understanding and more rapid improvement. We view STAR as an adjunct to the critical work of individual therapy; many of our participants are referred by their therapists. We also believe it is very helpful for participants to have a qualified professional with whom they can continue their healing journey after STAR. STAR works best for people who are in transition or life crisis: those who are feeling stuck, those struggling with depression or a sense that there must be more in life, those in recovery (especially those in second-stage recovery, after basic sobriety), and those who want to understand the roots of their addictive or dysfunctional behavior. STAR is not recommended for people who are unable to take care of themselves physically, who are a danger to themselves or others, or are actively abusing drugs or alcohol. We do not accept clients with severe psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia or multiple personality/dissociative identity disorder. STAR is not a hospital setting in any sense of the word, and we do not prescribe or dispense medications.
